Pet Therapy is informal meeting and visiting between pets and people.
Pet Therapy handlers are volunteers. They take their pets to visit people in hospitals, nursing homes, assisted-living communities, rehabilitation centers, schools, prisons, and centers for juvenile delinquents.
While the visits are generally scheduled, Pet Therapy interactions are casual and spontaneous. Visits can be short or long. Visits can be single occasions, but often are planned to happen on a repeated regular schedule (for example, once a week).
"I think pet therapy is about when people are feeling down, sad, and lonely in a type of Hospital. People bring their dogs to cheer up the people that are feeling down. The dogs play with them and do tricks for them and just sit there so the people can pet and love them." (Nathan)
