Traditions - The Pledge of Allegiance

Francis Bellamy (1855 - 1939) wrote the pledge in August 1892. He was a Baptist minister. The pledge was published in the September 8th issue of The Youth's Companion (which was like today's magazine Readers Digest).

The original pledge read:

I pledge allegiance to my flag, and the republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Over the years there were changes made. Today the pledge is:

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

by Michael S.

What is a pledge?

It is a promise.

How is the Pledge of Allegiance said?

Stand and face the flag. Put your right hand on your chest over your heart. Say the words of the pledge.

In 1942 the United States Congress officially included the pledge as part of the United States Flag Code.
