When making a list of Philadelphia area foods, we naturally included Philadelphia Cream Cheese which we had always assumed came from Philadelphia.
We were quite surprised to find out that it doesn't come from Philadelphia at all!
We checked Kraft's web site and learned the following:
Cream Cheese in this country goes back to 1872. It is credited to a dairyman from Chester, New York, who used cream and whole milk to make this rich-tasting cheese.
In 1880, A. L. Reynolds began to distribute cream cheese for sale wrapped in tin-foil. This cheese was called "Philadelphia Brand Cream Cheese".
Why? At that time, Philadelphia had a well-known reputation for top quality foods. Seeing the name "Philadelphia" on something made people want to buy and try it.
Today, Philadelphia Cream Cheese is enjoyed around the world (including the Philadelphia area).
