Reflections . . . students' thoughts following Kathy Daly's visit and presentation with Seeing Eye Dog, Honor
I like the videos because in the video there were a few things that were very important to learn when people are around blind people who have Seeing Eye dogs. They must know they're busy, and you're not allowed to distract or pet them. (Kyle)

I liked Kathy the presenter. She was nice. I really enjoyed seeing Honor.
I liked petting him. (Tommy)
I think Kathy did a great job. I learned a lot when she had us cover our eyes to see what it was like to be blind. It wasn't a good feeling. I learned that if a blind person does not have a dog, they can use a cane or a person. I liked when she used Megan to help her walk around. I also learned that you can pet a Seeing Eye dog if they are not working. I like that Kathy told us about how Honor helped her friend who was blind. She also told us a bout a special wallet that her friend has that tells her the amount of change she is putting into her wallet. Another thing helps her to tell the color of the dresses when she is shopping. (Parris)

When I first met Honor, the German Shepherd, I could instantly tell that he was a very sweet and caring dog. Honor was born in the Seeing Eye School, in Morristown, New Jersey. When Honor and Kathy came to visit us on January 24, 2003, I was nervous about approaching Honor at first because of my allergies, but I decided to pet him anyway and wash my hands. I definitely enjoyed the Seeing Eye dog coming to my school. I learned a lot about the blind and their wonderful guides. They showed us how they reward the dogs for a good job. They use redirection and repetition, but never punish them. When they do a good job, they are rewarded with verbal praise and affection, but never with food. I think Honor is a very special animal and I wish I could have him as my pet. (Lori)

When I saw Honor, the German Shepherd, he seemed very friendly. He usually helps out the blind at the Seeing Eye School. When he was a puppy, he was given to a Seeing Eye Volunteer. Honor was really cute when I petted him. I enjoyed Honor's company. He is really friendly with people. When Honor was helpful and very friendly to people we give him verbal praise. When Honor isn't paying attention on the streets, we never punish him. The blind person redirects the Seeing Eye Dog to the same task over and over again until he gets it perfect. (Megan)
I think I learned a lot from the videos. I learned about the dogs and the school. I saw that people could interrupt the dog. I remember the example of the woman trying to help the owner cross the street. The owner said, "Thank you for helping, but the dog has to do its job." (Parris)

I liked the videos. They were good. They showed the different dogs and how they are trained. It also showed the blind people walking with their dogs. (John)
When I first saw Honor I was scared. After I learned about the Seeing Eye dogs I wasn't scared anymore. I pet Honor and he was nice. (Alyssa)
