Interview with Mrs. Egbert, dog owner

Mrs. Egbert adopted a dog from a local animal shelter. Her son, Tom, works as a special assistant in our classroom. We sent her some written questions, and Tom returned her written answers, along with a photo of Lou. Here's the information we learned:

Where did you adopt your dog?
Animal Welfare Association (AWA), Voorhees, New Jersey

Did you have to sign papers or go to court?
Yes, I had to sign papers, but not go to court.

How did you find your dog? Did you look in many different places?
I just went to look, and when I saw a Beagle that was it. I only looked at the AWA - I think you should adopt dogs and not buy them in a pet store.

Was it hard to pick our your dog? How did you know that he was the right one?
It was not hard to pick out my dog. I saw him and knew he was the one. I love beagles!

Did you have any other pets before?
Yes, 2 dogs.

How old were they? Please describe them - large or small, names, color, etc.
One lived to 22 years old. The other to 6 years. They were medium size, about 25 pounds. Tugs, the 22 year old, was grey. Harley was tri-colored (brown, black, & white).

Are you happy with your dog?
I am happy with my dog Lou. This was the third dog I got at the AWA. I didn't have any problems.

Would you go back to the same place to get another pet?
Yes I would. I already did three times.

How much did it cost to adopt Lou?
About $75.00 . This included getting him neutered which we are required to do so they don't reproduce.

How did you pick the name Lou?
Lou was the name of the beagle dog in the movie Cats and Dogs.

Where does your dog live?
My dog lives in my house.

What does he like to do for fun?
He likes to fetch and tug toys. He also likes to chew chewys.

Does Lou have any behavior problems?
Lou has no behavior problems.

Does Lou go outside?
Lou goes outside on a leash.

Do you take Lou for a walk?
I sometimes take him for walks.

Does Lou get along with other animals?
Lou loves being with other dogs only. He barks at deer and turkeys in our yard. He ignores rabbits.

Do you have any suggestions/advice for someone who is adopting an animal?
Make sure when you adopt a pet that you know a pet is a big responsibility and is part of your family. A pet requires attention, love and discipline. Pets take time and money to care for them. If you live in an apartment you shouldn't get a big dog. If you don't have a yard to let your dog out in, you have to spend time to walk him. If you show your pet love and attention he will give the same back to you.
