"If you talk to the animals they will talk with you and you will know each other.

If you do not talk to them you will not know them, and what you do not know you will fear.

What one fears one destroys."

- Chief Dan George

You can sometimes tell a lot about a person by how they treat animals.

People who are good to animals are caring and compassionate. They act responsibly. They don't neglect their pets. They take care of them, feed them, water them, exercise them, and give them attention and love.

A person who is good to animals often shows the same feelings of caring and compassion to other people.

For our project, we decided to investigate some of the issues of stray and unwanted pets in Camden County, New Jersey.

We defined stray pets as those who had run or wandered away from their homes. Unwanted pets, on the other hand, are pets whose owner either doesn't want them anymore or can no longer care for them.

We interviewed some subject matter experts, visited several local animal shelters, and found other information on the Internet, including shelter statistics and rabies cases within New Jersey.

We found out that there has been continued improvement over the years related to the problems these animals face. Some important factors include increased public awareness, education, reduced cost of spay and neuter services for animal population control, free rabies vaccinations, and Internet access to local animal shelter information (including photos and histories of animals needing adoption).

We think that our topic fits into this year's CyberFair theme of "Prepare and Unite!" since pets are a part of our lives. Showing responsibility, caring and compassion for pets enhances positive values in our communities. New Jersey's state, county and municipal resources, as well as private animal shelters, and individuals who work with and/or care for animials, all continue to work toward making more improvements in the lives and conditions of stray and unwanted pets now and in the years to come.

Finally, since we are all animal lovers, we decided to share photos of our own pets and some of the things we do for them on the web pages throughout our project.

I feed her biscuits, talk to her, call her Doggy-Dog and a Beautiful Canine."
